Registration Open for the 37th Annual Freihofer's Run for Women:

10-Week Training Challenge Set to Launch 3/16; New Southern Saratoga Training Site Added

ALBANY, NY (February 25, 2015) — Registration is now underway for the 37th annual Freihofer’s Run for Women — one of the world’s most prestigious all-female 5K road races — on Saturday, May 30 in Albany, N.Y.

“This is a terrific event for first time runners. The camaraderie of being with other likeminded females and the motivation derived from participating in an event with Olympic and world champions guarantee a wonderful experience,” said Event Director George Regan. “We encourage runners to register as early as possible, so as not to get closed out of what promises to be an exciting celebration.”

The first 5,000 entrants will receive a micromesh v-neck t-shirt. Other perks include free health screenings by CapitalCare physicians, massages, chiropractic adjustments and discounted running gear at the CapitalCare/CDPHP Health & Fitness Expo; clinics featuring elite athletes; live music both around the course and on-stage following the race; refreshments courtesy of Price Chopper supermarkets; and, races for the kids throughout the day.

Participants interested in getting ready to run prior to race day are invited to register for the 5th annual Freihofer’s Training Challenge (http://www.freihofersrun.com/ftc.htm), which starts March 16. Attracting around 400 women last year ranging in age from 14-72, the popular 10-week program follows an enhanced version of the Couch to 5K Running Plan and also includes intermediate and advanced running levels, as well as a sportwalking option for those seeking a different approach to reaching the finish line.

Training Challenge participants can also join one of three teams captained by area media personalities Kelly Lynch Wyland (WGY-810 AM), Shanna Rose (99.5 FM The River) and Julia Dunn (CBS-6). They will then take part in walking, jogging and/or running sessions led by certified coaches.

The meeting schedule for the 2015 Training Challenge will be:

  • Mondays — The Crossings of Colonie (580 Albany Shaker Road) at 1:30 p.m., 5 p.m. or 6:30 p.m.
  • Wednesdays — Halfmoon baseball park (Route 236) at 6 p.m. The Training Challenge group will meet at the facility’s south picnic pavilion.

After taking part in either a Monday or Wednesday session, Training Challenge participants will complete a second workout on their own. A third workout session will be held in a group format on Saturdays at 8:30 a.m. at Colonie Town Park (71 Schermerhorn Road, Cohoes). Intermediate and advanced groups will also be asked to incorporate a fourth workout during the week. Each Saturday session will conclude with various seminars and clinics relating to nutrition, injury prevention, running form and core strength.

“This is an excellent opportunity for women who have never run before to cross the finish line with a smile, give their motivation a boost and make some new friends, while preparing for race day,” said Training Challenge Program Director and Coach Kristen Hislop. “With training advice provided by injury prevention experts, certified coaches and nutritionists, our program gives participants a tremendous amount of support to not only get started in running, but also continue running.”

For those who can’t participate in the full Freihofer's Training Challenge, a virtual training program is also offered. For more information, please visit http://www.freihofersrun.com/virtual.htm.

A one-hour Freihofer’s Training Challenge presentation will be held Thursday, Feb. 26 at 6:30 p.m. at the Athleta store in Crossgates Mall. The session will cover how to get started with the Training Challenge and address any concerns. Presenters will include program coaches, mentors and media personalities. Attendees will have a chance to walk home with a race entry, an Athleta gift card or other great goodies.

A second hour-long overview session is set for Thursday, March 5 at 6 p.m. at Troy’s Italian Community Center (1450 5th Ave.). Attendees will again have the chance to meet the coaches, as well as the program’s mentors, nutritionist, injury prevention specialist, and certified trainers.
